Tailored Solutions: Engineering a Marketplace for Automotive Enthusiasts

Automotive engine parts, representing the rare car parts traded on the GMS marketplace

At North P&D, we partnered with Grease Monkey Swaps (GMS) to bring their vision to life: an online marketplace built by car enthusiasts, for car enthusiasts. GMS set out to create a trusted platform where members could discover rare automotive parts, connect directly with sellers, and complete transactions without seller fees or restrictive time limits.

Our task was to build this marketplace from the ground up, designing, developing, and deploying a fully functional, secure, and scalable web application. The result was a platform that pairs a clean user experience with a robust backend, giving GMS a foundation to change how enthusiasts buy and sell parts across the country.

Foundation and collaboration

The project began with close collaboration between the GMS team and their design partners, who delivered Figma prototypes that captured the platform’s vision: a clean, intuitive interface tailored for car enthusiasts. With those designs as a guide, our role was to translate the vision into a robust, scalable application. Early planning sessions aligned technical requirements with GMS’s mission of building a community-driven marketplace where users could browse, connect, and trade. This foundation ensured the development roadmap addressed both user experience and long-term scalability.

Engineering the marketplace platform

Once the design vision was established, we shifted our focus to building the backbone of the application. Using Laravel (PHP), Vue.js, and MySQL, we built a scalable, high-performance architecture capable of supporting thousands of listings, real-time interactions, and secure transactions.

A key part of development was reliable communication between buyers and sellers, handled through an in-app messaging system powered by Laravel Reverb. At the same time, we prioritized reliability and security with robust authentication, optimized database structures, and strict PHP controllers to manage user interactions and transactions.

The result was a platform that delivered a smooth experience at launch and a technical foundation built for future growth and heavy traffic.

Key features of the platform

The GMS marketplace was built with a full set of features to support a community of automotive enthusiasts:

  • Listings system. Sellers can create detailed posts with photos, descriptions, and metadata, while buyers can filter by make, model, year, and condition to quickly find parts.
  • Advanced search. Optimized queries help users discover rare items, from project cars to barn finds, without sifting through irrelevant results.
  • Real-time messaging. Built with Laravel Reverb, the in-app chat system supports buyer-seller communication with notifications and live updates.
  • Stripe-powered memberships. Secure integration with Stripe handles subscription plans, automated billing, and payments.
  • Authentication and security. PHP controllers and database safeguards protect data integrity and sensitive information.
  • Optimized infrastructure. Performance tuning and a scalable architecture keep the platform running smoothly under peak demand.

The impact of GMS Marketplace

The launch of the GMS Marketplace resulted in a feature-rich, community-driven platform that changed how car enthusiasts connect and trade. Users can browse and discover rare automotive parts from across Canada, supported by advanced search and filtering tools. The real-time messaging system lets buyers and sellers communicate securely, negotiate deals, and build relationships within the community. With secure payments, verified members, and trusted delivery options, the platform gives users confidence in every transaction.

Just as important, the scalable technical foundation means GMS can keep growing, supporting more listings, users, and features as the community expands. By eliminating seller fees and offering a streamlined experience, GMS lets automotive enthusiasts trade parts more freely, efficiently, and securely than before.

Conclusion

Through this collaboration, North P&D delivered a fully customized marketplace application that combined thoughtful design, backend engineering, and secure transactions into one platform. GMS now stands as a go-to destination for car enthusiasts, a trusted community for buying and selling parts.

By pairing modern technologies with strategic design and rigorous development, we turned GMS’s vision into a scalable digital platform built to support the future of automotive trading.

I subcontracted North P&D as the primary software resource for a client of my own agency. The client needed a full-stack web app, so after being referred to JP and his team from a mutual partner of ours, I was more than happy to take him on board.

I can say, with all of my heart, this was the right decision to make. What would have otherwise been a very tough project to navigate on my own, having North P&D to assist made things a lot smoother than I could have dreamed of. I was able to give JP a Figma file and a Loom video, and he’d turn it into a masterpiece. A few project management difficulties cropped up on my side, but the team were happy to take it in their stride, let me know what was reasonable, and move forward applicably.

From one single project, I am proud to call North P&D my agency’s software development partner of choice, and look forward to more successful projects together.
